Ceramic Industry – an overview

The ceramic industry in Portugal is a traditional sector with high impact in the Portuguese economy. The annual turnover of the ceramic and glass sector is now more than 700 million Euros.

Centro has a large share of the Portuguese ceramic industry, because of the abundant natural clay deposits.

The ceramic industrial sector is quite diverse, and comprises four main sub-sectors:

· Building (floor linings, tiles and sanitaryware) and structural ceramics (pipes, bricks, vaults and other accessories);

· Utilitary and decorative ceramics (porcelain, tableware and decorative ware, pottery);

· Technical ceramics and electrical insulators;

· Refractory ceramics (tubing, oven material, thermal insulators, etc).
