The functional surface properties are gaining increasing interest due to their key role in broad range of applications from modern sensor technology, filter and membrane technology, diverse applications in process industry ( chemical, pulp and paper, food processing, medicine production, metallurgical processes etc.) to biomaterial applications. These properties control also catalysis or adhesion, friction and wear as well as several key steps in ceramic processing. The understanding of basic mechanisms controlling these surface functions requires multidisciplinary approach. The basic phenomena have been broadly studied and understood in different disciplines but seldom this understanding is combined interdisciplinary to tailor industrial solutions to wider industrial applications.
