Regional Outlook: Thick Ceramic Coatings in Wallonia

Ceramic coatings are part of the emerging technologies in Belgium. Very few firms are involved in this area, particularly in Wallonia, and of these the two main companies are:

  • Advanced Coating S.A.: This firm uses HVOF (High Velocity Oxy Fuel) for spraying tungsten and chromium carbide cermet coatings and plasma spraying on large rolling mill pieces.
  • Technospace Aero: The only Belgian engine manufacturer acting in the aerospace area produces YSZ (Yttria partially Stabilized Zirconia) based TBCs by plasma spraying.

A number of university laboratories are active in areas, which are related to ceramic coatings. They deal for example with the coating adhesion or interface chemistry (Université Catholique de Louvain), solar energy absorbent coatings (Université de Liège) or anti-corrosive coatings (Faculté Polytechnique de Mons).

However, as reported by the Walloon authorities1, « Non-Polluting Surface Treatments » and « Added or Surface Assembled Coatings » are two of the 40 key-technologies for future development in Wallonia. In this light, it can be expected that the area will expand significantly in the next years.
